Business as usual for tuck-shop as teen lays bleeding to death

A Phoenix family has been left traumatised after tuck-shop customers, in Unit 7, allegedly reached over their haemorrhaging 16-year-old son to buy cool-drinks and airtime, as he took his last breath after a vicious knife attack.  The alleged negligence and lack of sympathy from community members and health services around Southvale, left the Naidu family shocked and disheartened. This comes after they were informed of the devastating news of 16-year-old Titus Josiah Naidu, a Grade 10 learner, being stabbed and killed, near a local, tuck-shop on Tuesday, 25 October. Titus and his friend, who witnessed the incident and is known to the Phoenix Tabloid, were walking towards the tuck-shop when they passed his alleged killer and his two friends, who are also around the same age as the deceased. The group are said to have intimidated and passed remarks towards Titus, whom they have been bullying for months. Titus and his family had just moved to Swanvale after losing their home in Eastbury. Upon entering the tuck-shop and notifying the owner that he is unsettled by the suspect and his accomplices behaviours, Titus was taken outside by one of the accomplices stating that they just wanted too talk to him. According to the witness, the deceased stepped out of the shop where he was then punched and stabbed in the chest.“When Titus went outside, the suspect punched him and then stabbed him in his chest near his heart. Titus turned around holding his chest and told me that he had been stabbed and he walked back in the shop. In a few seconds his eyes rolled back where he fell to his knees and collapsed, I left him laying there to call the family to help us,” said the friend. According to the family, they were informed of what had happened and when they arrived to the scene they saw Titus lying on the floor not moving. The Naidu family said locals were just passing by with no remorse while the deceased’s sister, Trisha Govender tried to put pressure on his wound and talk to him. The family said during that time people were leaning over them both and continued with their buying and conversing. “My mum was outside on her knees begging and trying to stop vehicles and people to help us. She begged them to get help, call an ambulance or just assist us and no one had any compassion or remorse to help my dying brother,” said Govender. The family said they are hurt by the inhumane behaviour toward them by the residents of Swanvale. They stated that the community and health services have failed them. The deceased’s dad Morgan Naidu stated his was upset by this behaviour. “We are new to this community and I am still so heartbroken and saddened by seeing my child laying on the floor bleeding while transactions were being made. If someone had stopped to assist us and if the ambulance had gotten there earlier my son might still be alive. The community had no sympathy for us, I have lost faith in good Samaritans existing in Phoenix”, said Naidu. The ambulance driver allegedly informed the deceased’s father, that he was diverted to another scene while on his way to them. The deceased passed away 10 minutes after being stabbed and was pronounced dead on arrival at the unit 10 Clinic. “Titus went for help inside the tuck-shop and because of the lack in community compassion and negligence he died,” said Naidu. The tuck-shop owner allegedly refused to assist or get help for the deceased. “The owner told people to leave my child like that until an ambulance came, my daughter was distraught trying to stop the blood loss while my wife was crying outside for help and he didn’t close the door or give some kind of respect toward my son and family,” said the deceased dad. The family believe that their son’s murder was not an accident and that it was premeditated as “the provocation was going on for some time” between the suspect and deceased. According to the family the suspect is well known within the Unit 7 community and has been known to have a bad reputation. It is alleged that when the family went to wash out the deceased blood they were provoked by the suspects and his girlfriend. Titus’ mother, Nancy Naidu, said: “I can’t get my child back, but I don’t want to see another child lose their life in such a reckless manner at the hands of these kind of people. I can’t believe my son was taken away from me like this, while he just went to buy coke.”She described her late son as a humble and loving young man. “Titus was quiet, humble respectful child, who did not deserve to die in such a reckless manner. I want justice for my son, as a mother I am so broken and hurt, I want these killers removed from society”, she added. According to Captain Louise Naidoo, Phoenix SAPS communications officer, the suspect was arrested soon after the incident and charged with murder. “It is alleged, according to the witness, that the victim and suspect were fighting about whose district area it was. The suspect took out a butterfly knife, as the victim advanced to the suspect, the suspect stabbed him once on the chest and he fell on the ground. The victim was then taken to the clinic and pronounced dead on arrival”, said Cpt Naidoo.
