Local Merebank barber and Pakistani national brutally murdered on Ajmer Road

The residents of Merebank are reeling from shock after a well-known 22-year-old Pakistani national and local barber, identified as Bassat Ali, was brutally murdered and allegedly tortured, on Ajmer Road, last night, Tuesday 25 October.

A missing person’s poster was circulated nearly a week ago, seeking information on Ali’s whereabouts.

One suspect, a male (41), was arrested approximately two hours after the deadly stabbing.

It is alleged that the members of Wentworth SAPS Vispol were alerted to a report of a male victim who was stabbed at about 19: 40 pm.

Wentworth SAPS communications officer, Captain MP Gumede said: “The officers, Sergeant Sibisi and Sergeant Mthembu responded immediately to the scene and on arrival, the victim aged 22, who is alleged to be a Pakistani national was already transported to Wentworth Hospital. According to information received, the suspect aged 41, had made the accusations of theft of a large amount of cash and he implicated the victim as the one who had stolen his money.”

“It is alleged that the victim was assaulted, and stabbed in the chest and back, before he was rushed to hospital where, on arrival, he succumbed to his injuries. Wentworth SAPS attended the scene and immediately arrested the suspect, aged 41 years on the same night, at about 22:40, and detained him for murder,” added Cpt Gumede.

The investigating officer in the murder case, Detective Sergeant Mhlongo, is appealing to any witnesses who might have seen the incident, to contact him on 031-4516240/41/42.

The accused will appear in the Durban court on Thursday, 27 October 2022.
